The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Sudan estimated that more than 3,300 South Sudanese refugees have crossed into the country since the beginning of this year, fleeing the deteriorating security and humanitarian conditions in Upper Nile State.
The Commission explained that families fleeing violence, hunger, and the collapse of basic services are arriving in Sudan despite its own massive displacement crisis. It noted that more than 36,000 South Sudanese refugees have sought refuge in White Nile State alone since April of last year.
It confirmed that reception centers and shelters have reached their maximum capacity, while health services are under severe pressure and food aid is dwindling. The agency warned of increasing needs and called for urgent support to strengthen the humanitarian response.
