Rising Malnutrition Among Children and the Elderly in East Darfur

Follow-ups – Mashawir

Displaced people at the Sabreen Camp in Asalaya locality, East Darfur State, are suffering from deteriorating humanitarian conditions, particularly due to a lack of clean water, food shortages, and a severe deficiency in basic services. Warnings have been issued that the crisis could escalate into a disaster with the approaching rainy season.

A statement released by the Asalaya Local Emergency Room highlighted that food scarcity among the displaced has led to clear signs of malnutrition, particularly among children and women, emphasizing the urgent need for effective intervention.

According to the statement, most of the displaced families in the camp have fled from areas such as North Darfur, Nyala, Omdurman, Khartoum, and the town of Umm Marhi. The Asalaya locality is currently hosting around 3,800 displaced individuals, distributed between the Sabreen Camp, shelters within government facilities, and with resident host families.

The Emergency Room appealed to humanitarian organizations and charitable entities for immediate intervention, warning that the failure to provide urgent support could dangerously worsen the situation—especially as the rainy season approaches, which will make access to basic services even more difficult.
