As clashes intensify in El Fasher, the town of Tawila in North Darfur has witnessed a surge in new waves of displacement from the city, its camps, and surrounding areas.
Adam Regal, spokesperson for the General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur, revealed a “significant increase in the number of people fleeing the city over the past two weeks.”
He stated that “displaced persons are facing severe hardships along the route to Tawila, including death, assault, and gender-based physical violence, while those who manage to reach safety lack adequate shelter.”
For over a year, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have besieged the city of El Fasher—one of the hottest fronts in the ongoing conflict—as they make relentless attempts to seize control of the city. El Fasher remains the last state capital in the Darfur region still held by the Sudanese army, after the RSF took control of the other four state capitals: West, Central, East, and South Darfur.
