The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) expressed concern over reports from the besieged city of El Fasher indicating that more than 60 people have died from hunger and malnutrition in just one week.
OCHA predicted that famine is likely to spread to other areas, after it was first documented about a year ago in the Zamzam IDP Camp in the state.
In the same context, the UN confirmed that its local partners have reported more than 5,300 suspected and confirmed cholera cases, with 84 deaths since June 21, most of them in Tawila locality, which hosts more than 330,000 displaced people from El Fasher and Zamzam Camp. Overcrowding, deteriorating sanitation, limited humanitarian access, and the rainy season are all accelerating the spread of the disease.
