The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, said that the war in Sudan has nearly turned this country into a “land of despair.”
He added that both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continue to use explosive weapons in densely populated areas, attacking schools, hospitals, markets, and places of worship in flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.
Turk explained that the parties, and primarily the Rapid Support Forces, have repeatedly used drones to target critical infrastructure, including power stations, dams, and fuel tanks, leaving behind massive impacts on civilians.
He noted that his office identified more than 500 victims of sexual violence last year, including rape, gang rape, sexual torture, and enslavement. The office also documented a sharp rise in summary executions of those accused of cooperating with the opposing side.
