18 dead in drone strike near Sudan’s southern border

Al Muglad - Mashaweer

A drone strike on the city of Al Muglad, which is controlled by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) near the border with South Sudan, resulted in the death of at least 18 people yesterday (Wednesday), according to a medical source who spoke to Agence France-Presse today (Thursday), in an attack attributed to the Sudanese army.

The RSF also accused the army of targeting the market of Al Muglad in West Kordofan State, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries among unarmed civilians.

A medical source told Agence France-Presse that 18 people were killed and 25 were injured, some with critical injuries, as a result of the army’s drone bombardment of the city.

Al Muglad is located in West Kordofan State, dozens of kilometers south of Babanusa, the last stronghold in the region for the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) that was captured by the RSF last November.

The SAF and the RSF have been at war since April 2023, causing the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of more than 11 million people in what the United Nations describes as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

Kordofan has become the main front line in Sudan since the RSF tightened their grip on the Darfur region following the fall of El Fasher in October 2025.

Kordofan, which is rich in oil and agricultural land, is considered a pivotal transit point between Darfur in the west, controlled by the RSF, and Khartoum and the cities of eastern Sudan under army control.

While talks regarding a humanitarian truce remain stalled, the United Nations has repeatedly called on the warring parties, whose military equipment is becoming increasingly sophisticated, to respect international humanitarian law and facilitate the access of humanitarian workers.
