WHO: 2,000 killed in attacks on hospitals in Sudan since the outbreak of war

Geneva - Mashaweer

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Ghebreyesus, revealed today (Sunday) that 2,036 people have been killed as a result of attacks on healthcare facilities in Sudan since the outbreak of the war in April 2023.

He explained that this statistic includes the attack on Al-Daein Hospital, where the shelling led to the death of at least 64 people, including 13 children, two nurses, a doctor, and a number of patients.

He stated that the shelling of Al-Daein Hospital resulted in the injury of 89 people, including 8 health workers, and also caused damage to the hospital’s pediatric, maternity, and emergency departments.

He pointed out that the number of wounded in this attack brought the total number of people injured due to attacks on healthcare during the war so far to 720.

Ghebreyesus stressed that attacks on healthcare leave immediate and long-term effects on communities that are already in dire need of emergency and routine medical services.

He added: “Enough blood has been shed, and enough suffering has been compounded. It is time to de-escalate in Sudan and ensure the protection of civilians, health workers, and humanitarian aid workers.”
