Resumption of river transport between Sudan and Egypt after 6-year

Wadi Halfa – Mashawir

Egypt and Sudan have announced the resumption of river transport between the two countries after a six-year suspension. Experts say the move could support the voluntary return of Sudanese nationals and boost trade and the movement of goods, strengthening economic cooperation between Cairo and Khartoum.

The first trial of the vessel Sinai arrived Friday at Wadi Halfa port in northern Sudan, coming from the High Dam port in southern Egypt, marking the restart of river navigation between the two countries.

Local officials in Wadi Halfa received the first voyage in the presence of the Egyptian Consul in Wadi Halfa, Ambassador Basel Taman, and the head of the Nile Valley River Transport Authority, Mohamed Adam Abkar.

Ali Hashim, Executive Director of Halfa locality, stressed the importance of resuming river navigation between Aswan and Wadi Halfa.

River transport between the two countries had been suspended since 2019 due to security and political conditions in Sudan—including the ongoing war—as well as logistical and technical challenges.
