The Sudanese pound has suffered another sharp decline, falling to around 6,400 pounds per US dollar within just a few days and losing more than 90 percent of its value. This marks its lowest level since the outbreak of the war in April 2023.
The sharp depreciation threatens to trigger another wave of price increases for goods and services, at a time when millions of Sudanese are already struggling with the effects of the war, declining incomes, and the disruption of economic activity. Experts warn that continued currency depreciation will fuel inflationary pressures and further deepen the country’s economic and humanitarian crisis.
Traders in the foreign exchange market said that “prices have become extremely volatile and are changing within hours,” noting that the dollar had surpassed 6,400 Sudanese pounds, an unprecedented level in recent years.
Economists have warned that the continued depreciation of the Sudanese pound could push inflation rates even higher, after they have already reached record levels as a result of the ongoing conflict in the country.
