An international meeting on the situation in Sudan affirmed that there is “no military solution” to the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has been ongoing since mid-April 2023.
Participants at the meeting in Geneva stated that “civilians are paying a heavy price for the continuation of the fighting, which is further worsening their suffering.”
They called for an urgent humanitarian truce to pave the way for a permanent ceasefire and urged the parties to the conflict to de-escalate tensions and engage seriously in a political process.
They also stressed the importance of ending foreign interference that fuels the war and reiterated their rejection of the establishment of parallel governments, reaffirming their commitment to Sudan’s unity.
These positions were expressed at the conclusion of the sixth consultative meeting, organised by the United Nations in Geneva to strengthen coordination among peace initiatives and efforts concerning Sudan.
The meeting brought together representatives from 22 countries, including the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, the United Kingdom, France, China and Russia, as well as Sudan’s neighbouring countries.
Representatives of regional and international organisations also participated, including the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
