Drone Attacks Strike Sudan’s Shendi, Plunging the City into Darkness

Shendi – Mashawir

Drone attacks on energy facilities across Sudan have continued for the fifth consecutive day. In the early hours of Friday, the city of Shendi in River Nile State, northern Sudan, came under an aerial attack that resulted in the destruction of its electricity substation, rendering it completely out of service and cutting off power to the city.

The strikes also extended to military sites and a fuel depot, marking the latest episode in a series of attacks targeting electricity stations and energy infrastructure across several Sudanese states. The attacks have raised concerns about a wider spread of power outages and disruptions to essential services.

Local sources said that “drones attacked Shendi early on Friday, triggering loud explosions across the city, followed by a fire at the electricity station and a subsequent power outage.”

The sources attributed the attack to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), although the group had not issued any statement claiming responsibility for the operation.

The Shendi Local Security Committee confirmed in a statement that the electricity substation had been completely put out of service following extensive damage to its transformers.

It also indicated that “the attack caused damage to the Nile Reserve Fuel Depot and a facility belonging to the Air Defence Forces.”
