Berlin Conference Secures $1.5 Billion for Sudan

Berlin – Mashawir

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Wednesday that an international donor conference for Sudan resulted in humanitarian aid pledges exceeding €1.3 billion ($1.53 billion).
He noted that Germany alone pledged €212 million ($249.97 million) in humanitarian assistance to Sudan.
Wadephul told Deutschlandfunk radio that the conference aims to keep Sudan in focus amid ongoing wars in Ukraine and Iran, which have drawn greater attention from European governments, alongside a decline in U.S. engagement in humanitarian aid.
Meanwhile, Comfort Ero, President and CEO of the International Crisis Group, stated:
“The harsh reality is that diplomacy has not risen to the level of this crisis.”
She added:
“The Berlin conference is an important signal that Sudan has not been forgotten, but the tragic reality is that an end to the war seems as distant as ever.”
For his part, UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged an “end to the nightmare” of the war in Sudan, as well as to “external interference and the flow of weapons fueling” the conflict.
Guterres called for an “immediate cessation of hostilities” and urged the international community to “mobilize” in order to deliver humanitarian aid that remains “insufficient” compared to last year.
