United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Associate Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, Haoliang Xu, stated that Sudan is experiencing one of the most severe public health emergencies in the world.
The UN official added that the war has pushed Sudan’s economy back more than 30 years, with extreme poverty rates now exceeding levels recorded in the 1980s.
He emphasized that “this crisis cannot be addressed through humanitarian aid alone, but requires sustainable investments in vital sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, energy, and governance.”
Xu further explained that around 34 million people in Sudan are now in urgent need of assistance—nearly two-thirds of the population—while about 19 million are facing acute food insecurity, and the number of displaced people has exceeded 13 million.
