Official statistics indicate that 19 forests in Khartoum, most of them located along the banks of the Nile, have been destroyed due to human activity during the period of armed conflict.
Sennar State, located in the south of the country and known for its dense forests, has witnessed significant deterioration in vegetation cover as many residents and displaced people have turned to charcoal production to earn a living and support their families.
Forests that once covered about 12 percent of the country’s area have, in some regions, shrunk by as much as 60 percent of their total size, according to government officials.
Musa Al-Safouri, Director General of the National Forestry Corporation, said that “the most affected states are Khartoum, Al Jazirah, and Sennar. In Al Jazirah, the rate of degradation has reached 60 percent, while in Sennar it ranges between 40 and 50 percent .”
