Sudanese Migrants Drown Off Libyan Coast

Tobruk – Mashawir

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced the death of 17 Sudanese refugees after a boat sank off the coast of the Libyan city of Tobruk.

The agency reported that only 7 people survived, while 9 others remain missing from the 33.

UNHCR explained that “such tragedies will not stop unless the war in Sudan ends and alternatives to deadly journeys are provided through safe and legal pathways.”

Libya has become a major transit point for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty, attempting to reach Europe.

In the case of Sudanese migrants, ongoing civil war, economic collapse, and insecurity are key drivers forcing people to leave their country.

Since the outbreak of conflict in Sudan in 2023 between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, millions have been living in dire conditions, either internally displaced or fleeing across borders.
