Authorities Arrest Dozens of Protesters Over Power Outages in Northern Sudan

Abri – Mashawir

Police on Saturday arrested protesters who opposed the continued electricity outages in the town of Abri in Northern State.

Young people in the area staged demonstrations for the second consecutive day amid growing frustration among residents over harsh scheduled power cuts lasting for long hours, especially as temperatures reach record highs during the summer season.

On Friday, police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of demonstrators protesting the electricity outages in Abri, located in the far north of the country, where temperatures rise sharply during the summer months.

The group Shabab Abri Al-Samidoon condemned what it described in a statement as the excessive violence used by local authorities in dealing with the recent protests in the city.

The statement explained that security forces carried out widespread arrests among peaceful protesters before releasing 26 people on Saturday evening after they had allegedly been subjected to beatings and torture, resulting in various injuries and fractures among some detainees.
