Including Sudan: UN Report Identifies Four Arab Countries as Hunger Hotspots

Port Sudan – Mashawir

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in cooperation with the World Food Programme (WFP), has issued warnings that millions of people are at risk of sliding into catastrophic levels of hunger due to the combined impact of armed conflicts and economic crises.

According to a joint report by the two organizations, the food crisis—described as “hunger hotspots”—is concentrated in several countries, including four Arab states: Palestine, Sudan, Yemen, and Somalia.

The situation is being further aggravated by a significant decline in funding for organizations providing food assistance. Reports indicate that funding has fallen by nearly 60 percent between 2022 and 2025. International organizations describe this as a dangerous gap that is hindering life-saving operations and increasing the risk of malnutrition, particularly among children and women.

Jean-Martin Bauer, Director of Food Security Analysis at the World Food Programme, emphasized that countries such as Sudan, South Sudan, Yemen, Palestine, Nigeria, and Somalia are classified among those of “highest concern,” as their populations face severe levels of acute food insecurity, including famine and death.
