The United States expressed deep concern on Monday over alarming indications pointing to the possibility of imminent mass atrocities in the Sudanese city of El Obeid, where the United Nations has also warned of a potential attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In a statement, the U.S. Department of State urged both parties to the conflict to refrain from any actions that could endanger civilians, obstruct humanitarian assistance, or contribute to further atrocities.
Fears are growing that El Obeid could face a scenario similar to that of El Fasher, which fell under RSF control last year after an 18-month siege.
Large parts of North Kordofan State are experiencing a rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation due to restrictions on the movement of goods, food supplies, and medicines between conflict-affected areas, according to the Emergency Lawyers group.
