The United Nations Security Council is set to hold a session next Friday to hear its periodic briefing (held every 120 days) on developments in Sudan.
Earlier this week, Council members warned in an official statement of an imminent risk of mass atrocities and called for an immediate halt to the Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) offensive on El Obeid.
Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor to the U.S. President for African and Arab Affairs, revealed in a post on X that he, alongside the UN Special Envoy Pekka Haavisto, will address the Council session dedicated entirely to discussing the situation in Sudan.
Boulos said he will present a clear call to the Council for a coordinated international effort aimed at securing an urgent humanitarian truce that could pave the way for a permanent ceasefire. He stressed that such a step represents the only viable entry point for launching a political process that would restore stability to Sudan and alleviate the suffering of civilians.
