Sudan, the Beating Heart Between Two Continents

Ali eabd alqadir

The book Sudan, the Beating Heart Between Two Continents represents a major milestone in

the history of Sudanese literature written in French. It ranks among the first books authored by a

Sudanese researcher in the French language with the aim of presenting his country to the

French-speaking readership from an insider’s perspective, grounded in a rigorous scientific

approach and a vision deeply rooted in the national reality. Moving beyond the often reductive

representations that have long characterized part of the foreign literature devoted to Sudan, this

work is presented not merely as a historical or geographical synthesis, but as a genuine

intellectual project intended to rediscover Sudan as a space of civilization and a strategic bridge

linking the Arab world with Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as the shores of the Red Sea with the

heart of the African continent.

Published in 2020 by La Chaire Internationale de la Gouvernance Publique, the book

immediately attracted considerable interest within academic and cultural circles upon its

release. It includes forewords by Professor Romain Pasquier, Deputy Director of the Institut

d’études politiques de Rennes, and Professor Laurence Limouzi, Director of Studies at the

Institut supérieur des sciences de l’administration publique et de la politique in Paris.

Their forewords attest to the scholarly value of the work and its contribution to renewing studies

devoted to Sudan, Africa, and Afro-Arab relations.

The author takes the reader on an intellectual journey spanning several millennia of history. He

traces the remarkable legacy of the Nubian and Kushite kingdoms, highlighting their contribution

to world history, before examining Sudan’s unique geostrategic position, which over the

centuries has made the country a crossroads of trade routes, a meeting place of civilizations,

and a privileged arena for exchanges among cultures, religions, and peoples.

Adopting a balanced analytical approach, the book also highlights Sudan’s cultural, linguistic,

and religious diversity. The author views this diversity not as a source of division, but rather as

one of the principal foundations of the Sudanese nation and its civilizational vitality, provided

that it is embedded within a national project founded upon citizenship, justice, and the rule of

law. At the same time, he examines with clarity the challenges the country has faced, including

political instability, military coups, institutional fragility, and their consequences for economic and

social development.

The book also emphasizes Sudan’s immense economic potential, endowed with vast

agricultural lands, abundant water resources, substantial livestock, and extensive mineral

wealth. According to the author, these assets could enable Sudan to become a leading regional

economic power, provided they are accompanied by responsible governance, strong

institutions, lasting political stability, and efective management of national resources. The central thesis of the book rests on the idea that Sudan is by no means a peripheral actor in

regional afairs. On the contrary, it constitutes the beating heart between two continents, and the

crises it is experiencing today can only be understood in light of its millennia-old history, its

exceptional geographical position, its cultural diversity, and the multiple geopolitical dynamics

that intersect within it. From this perspective, the author invites readers to adopt a renewed

understanding of Sudan by viewing it as one of the keys to stability and development in Africa

and the Middle East, rather than simply as a country marked by conflict and crisis.

This work forms part of the broader intellectual project of Dr Ali Abdelgadir, a Sudanese writer

and researcher residing in Paris. Holding a doctorate from Université Paris VII as well as a

PhD from the Centre d’études diplomatiques et stratégiques (CEDS) in Paris, he is the

author of numerous publications in Arabic, French, and English devoted to the political history of

Sudan, geopolitics, national identity, as well as literature and the novel.

Among his principal publications are:

● Aperçus de l’histoire politique moderne du Soudan (1956–2022), published in Arabic and

subsequently translated into French and English;

● the series Mon cœur pour ma patrie, comprising nine volumes that bring together

political and intellectual essays devoted to Sudanese issues;

● the novel L’enfance volée d’une Diablesse;

● the novel L’âme nomade, le corps exilé.

Sudan, the Beating Heart Between Two Continents therefore constitutes a cornerstone of Dr Ali

Abdelgadir’s intellectual and cultural project. Through his writings, he pursues a consistent

ambition: to introduce Sudan to the world in several languages, relying on an approach that is

both scientific and humanistic, making knowledge an instrument of dialogue among peoples and

history a key to understanding the present and building the future.

More than a work of geopolitics, this book is an invitation to rediscover Sudan in the full depth of

its civilizational heritage, the uniqueness of its geostrategic position, and the vastness of its

potential, so that it may regain the place that rightfully belongs to it.
