Disease Outbreaks Devastate Displacement Camps in North Darfur

Tawila – Mashaweer

The General Coordination of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Refugees in the Darfur Region has warned of the worsening humanitarian and health situation in displacement camps, stating that the crisis has exceeded tolerable limits and now threatens the lives of thousands of displaced families every day amid the continued collapse of basic services.

The Coordination’s spokesperson, Adam Rijal, told Mashaweer that displaced people are living under extremely harsh conditions following the suspension of services at most healthcare facilities in North Darfur State.

He pointed to the widespread outbreak of infectious diseases, including malaria, measles, acute diarrhea, and cholera, amid severe shortages of medicines and essential medical supplies.

Rijal added that children and women are the most vulnerable groups, with malnutrition rates among them reaching alarming levels, warning that the situation is rapidly escalating into a humanitarian catastrophe.

He further explained that shortages of food, clean water, and shelter have contributed to rising mortality rates, alongside increasing cases of psychological trauma and gender-based violence, further exacerbating the vulnerability of displaced communities.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mustafa Abdel Karim, a field physician working in Darfur’s displacement camps, told Mashaweer that the deteriorating health situation requires an urgent response from the international community, humanitarian organizations, and public health agencies.

He called for the immediate provision of food, medicine, and shelter, the rehabilitation of the healthcare system, and unhindered humanitarian access to affected populations.
