Women volunteers in White Nile State have launched a project aimed at alleviating the humanitarian suffering and promoting self-reliance among people affected by the conflict, now in its second year. The project targets several localities across the state, including Kosti, Al-Jabalain, and Tendalti.
Asia Mustafa, a member of the Nuba Women’s Association for Education and Development (NOWEDA), told Mashaweer that “the project focuses on gradually shifting from humanitarian response to self-reliance by improving livelihoods, developing life, economic, and vocational skills, strengthening protection, and supporting social cohesion and peaceful coexistence.”
She added that the project’s interventions include training displaced women in food processing, supporting livelihoods and income-generating projects, providing safe spaces and protection and referral services, distributing food assistance, and building the capacities of local organizations and communities.
Meanwhile, Iman Hasab Al-Rasoul, a women’s rights activist in White Nile State, told Mashaweer that strengthening self-reliance cannot be achieved through aid alone, but requires empowerment and capacity building, the provision of livelihood opportunities, as well as strengthening protection and social cohesion.
