The Khartoum State government has announced a package of measures to control bread prices following a rapid increase in flour prices and production costs, which has led to a significant rise in the price of bread.
The move comes as the continued depreciation of the Sudanese pound against foreign currencies has driven up the prices of flour and bread-production inputs. This has prompted some bakeries in the state to introduce a new pricing structure, raising the price of a single piece of bread to 500 Sudanese pounds, compared with the previous price of three pieces for 1,000 pounds.
Khartoum State has introduced a package of measures aimed at ensuring the continued availability of bread to citizens at the previous prices, following the recent rise in flour prices.
The meeting concluded with a number of recommendations, most notably exempting bakeries from all fees imposed by localities until the end of the year and requiring them to maintain the previous prices, with another meeting to be held to finalize the pricing arrangements.
