United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday held Sudanese parties responsible for the humanitarian situation in their country, while calling for accountability for countries fueling the conflict by supplying the parties with weapons used in attacks against civilians.
Guterres spoke at a press conference ahead of the opening of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, where world leaders are gathering to discuss global crises, economic issues, and international relations.
Guterres said, “The humanitarian situation in Sudan is dire, and the suffering of the Sudanese people is unbearable.”
He said that “the conflict in Sudan is being fueled by several countries from outside,” noting that the United Nations “does not have intelligence agencies, but the Security Council’s Panel of Experts analyzed this issue, and the conclusions are clear.”
He added: “There should be accountability for this kind of intervention, when some countries provide weapons to parties to a conflict and those weapons are widely used to attack civilians.
