Doctors Without Borders: Cholera Outbreak in Western Sudan Alarming and Requires Urgent Intervention

Follow-ups – Mashawir

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has expressed deep concern over a new wave of cholera spreading in western Sudan, particularly in the Darfur region. This comes at a time when cases in Khartoum State have declined to just 60, down from over a thousand at the onset of the outbreak, with only one reported death involving a patient with pre-existing conditions.

According to an MSF statement, “A wave of cholera has been gradually spreading recently from one state to another in Sudan.”

The organization noted that, for the first time since the conflict began, cholera cases have been reported in the Darfur region. It described this development as extremely worrying due to the high number of displaced people in the area and their lack of access to sanitation services and clean drinking water.

Most of the cases have been recorded in South Darfur, where MSF, in collaboration with the state Ministry of Health, is supporting rehydration points in residential areas.

The organization has also opened a new cholera treatment center at Al-Nahda Hospital in Nyala, noting that Nyala Teaching Hospital alone had recorded around 250 cases since May 27.

MSF has called on UN agencies and non-governmental organizations to act swiftly, mobilize funding, and deliver urgently needed supplies.
