The U.S. State Department has called on the Sudanese government to acknowledge the violations committed by the army through the use of chemical weapons during the ongoing war that has raged since mid-April 2023.
The State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs said in a post on its account on Platform X that “the Government of Sudan must immediately acknowledge its violations, halt any further use of chemical weapons, and fully cooperate with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).”
The United States has imposed sanctions on Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan after determining—according to its account—that the Sudanese Armed Forces used chemical weapons in 2024.
