Human Rights Watch said that “forces affiliated with the Sudanese army have carried out ‘arbitrary detention of civilians, torture, and other forms of ill-treatment’ in areas under their control, and have ‘denied them their rights to due process.’”
It added that “the army has launched a campaign of intimidation and retaliation against individuals it describes as collaborators, based on their ethnic identity, humanitarian work, political affiliation, or for having lived under the control of the Rapid Support Forces.”
The organization continued: “Authorities should take steps to end arbitrary detention, torture, and ill-treatment, and provide compensation to detainees and their families.”
It further stated: “International and regional actors should clearly signal to the military leadership that they will be held accountable.”
Human Rights Watch also noted that the Sudanese Public Prosecutor’s Office, in its response, said: “We reject the allegations regarding arbitrary arrests and deaths in detention, except for one case currently undergoing criminal proceedings.”
