UK Foreign Secretary: Sudan Faces the World’s Worst Humanitarian Disaster

Mashaweer – Agencies

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy warned on Monday that Sudan is experiencing “the worst humanitarian disaster in the world” during his participation in a conference on governance and development in Africa, held in Morocco.

Lammy made the remarks in response to a question from British-Sudanese businessman Mo Ibrahim, during the conference organized by Ibrahim’s foundation on governance in the city of Marrakesh.

Sudan, the third-largest country in Africa by area, has been witnessing a devastating war since April 2023. The conflict erupted due to a power struggle between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan — the de facto ruler of Sudan since the 2021 coup — and his former deputy, commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

The war has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced 13 million people. Some regions are suffering from famine amid what the United Nations describes as the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.

Lammy, who has been visiting Morocco since Sunday, added: “There is contradiction and ambiguity, and certainly a lack of global attention on this crisis, particularly from much of the Western world.”
