WHO: Current Situation a Humanitarian Catastrophe Threatening Millions in Conflict Zones

Follow-ups – Mashawir

The World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Sudan, Dr. Ni’ma Saeed Abid, stated that the capital, Khartoum, has become a war-ravaged city.

Speaking to journalists in Geneva via video link from Port Sudan, following his return from Khartoum, Abid explained that the Sudanese capital lacks the most basic necessities of life due to widespread destruction of infrastructure and the looting of numerous vital facilities, foremost among them health centers.

He noted that many hospitals and healthcare facilities are out of service due to vandalism and looting, power outages, lack of clean water, a shortage of medical staff, and a severe scarcity of medicines and medical supplies.

The WHO representative warned that the current situation constitutes a health and humanitarian catastrophe threatening the lives of millions in conflict-affected areas, amid the near-total collapse of the healthcare system in Khartoum State.

Abid called on the international community to redouble humanitarian efforts, ensure the protection of medical facilities, and facilitate the delivery of aid to those affected, especially in areas experiencing ongoing fighting.
