UN Fears Growing Humanitarian Crisis in North Darfur

Follow-ups – Mashawir

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has warned of a worsening humanitarian situation in the town of Tawila in North Darfur State, which has received nearly 379,000 displaced people over the past three months. The crisis is deepening amid the approaching rainy season, a cholera outbreak, and severe shortages of food, water, and sanitation facilities.

NRC’s Country Director in Sudan, Shashwat Saraf, stated in a press release that “the situation in Tawila is collapsing—families are surviving on scraps and sleeping in the open, with cholera spreading and drinking water and toilets in critically short supply.”

He noted that with the rainy season approaching, living conditions are deteriorating day by day.

Most of the residents of El Fasher city and internally displaced persons from its camps have fled to Tawila since fighting erupted between the Sudanese army and its allies from the Joint Forces of the Movements on one side and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the other.

According to an NRC assessment conducted in June 2025, four new camps in Tawila are now sheltering about 213,000 people. The data reveals that only 10% of the population has reliable access to water, and fewer than 10% of households have toilets. The assessment also found that most families are surviving on one meal or less per day, and there is a severe lack of education services, with only 11 learning centers available for all the children.

Since April, Tawila has witnessed an unprecedented wave of displacement, with approximately 782,000 people fleeing from El Fasher and Zamzam Camp.
