armers have warned that prolonged electricity and water outages could lead to the destruction of large areas of agricultural crops in Northern State, threatening the livelihoods of thousands of families.
Images circulating on social media show orchards and agricultural projects suffering from severe drought following disruptions to water supplies, at a time when thousands of farmers rely on electric pumps to irrigate their crops.
In this context, farmer Abdulwahab Hassan told Mashawir that agriculture in the state is facing major challenges due to the frequent power cuts, which have caused crop failures as a result of thirst and drought.
He added, “Last April, I planted onions across large areas of farmland, but unfortunately the entire crop was lost because of water shortages and the inability to pump water to the cultivated fields.”
He continued, “The losses I suffered have pushed me to make the decision to abandon farming permanently until conditions in the country improve, particularly in the electricity sector. I have already turned to artisanal mining as an alternative source of income.”
