Guterres Warns of Drone Attacks and Civilian Deaths in Sudan

Washington – Mashawir

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Saturday condemned the escalating drone attacks in Sudan carried out by parties to the conflict.

In a statement, the Secretary-General’s spokesperson said that Guterres “condemns the escalation of drone attacks in Sudan by the parties to the conflict and the devastating impact of these attacks on civilians.”

He noted that drone strikes had killed hundreds of civilians across Sudan, as well as in Abyei, the disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan, including women and children. Such attacks constitute violations of international humanitarian law.

In the statement, the Secretary-General also condemned all attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, including healthcare facilities.

Guterres called on the parties to the conflict to avoid putting civilians and critical infrastructure at risk and to agree, without delay, to a cessation of hostilities as a first step towards ending this devastating conflict.
