UN Declaration Holds Sudanese Army and RSF Responsible for War Crimes in Sudan

Banjul – Mashawir

The Joint Fact-Finding Mission of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission issued the “Banjul Joint Declaration” on Sudan, strongly condemning the widespread violations committed by both sides of the war — the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The declaration was issued on the sidelines of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights meetings currently taking place in Banjul.

It urgently called for the protection of civilians, an immediate ceasefire, and accountability for those responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The declaration stressed that “the war ongoing since mid-April 2023 has produced one of the world’s gravest humanitarian and human rights crises,” citing widespread human suffering, the mass displacement of millions of civilians, the collapse of essential services, worsening food insecurity, and growing threats to regional stability.

It further noted that “the continuation of military operations has led to escalating violence and violations across multiple regions of Sudan, particularly in Darfur and Kordofan.”
