Alarming Measles Outbreak in Kordofan and Darfur Leaves Hundreds Dead

Alaa Naqd, Minister of Health in the parallel “Ta’sis” government, said that “860 measles cases have been recorded, including 5 deaths, in South Kordofan and Blue Nile since last February.”

He added that “five vaccination campaigns were carried out in the localities of Um Dorein, Anban, Kobank, Northern Rural Habila, and Dallami, benefiting 97,849 children under the age of 15 in the Blue Nile region.”

He continued: “In East Darfur, 1,241 measles cases and 36 deaths have been recorded since last February.”

Naqd pointed out that “vaccination campaigns covered seven out of the nine localities in East Darfur.”

He further stated that “South Darfur, considered one of the states most affected, has recorded more than 10,184 suspected cases and 172 deaths.”

He noted that “vaccination campaigns reached 1,331,342 children out of a targeted 1,398,485 children in South Darfur. In North Darfur, the state recorded 3,593 suspected cases and 163 deaths, while in Central Darfur, 809,534 children were vaccinated, achieving a coverage rate exceeding 97 percent.”

He also reported “cases of watery diarrhea in Al-Nuhud locality in West Kordofan, totaling seven cases including two deaths, as well as 328 cumulative measles cases in West Kordofan, including 23 deaths.”
