At least 28 people were killed on Tuesday in a drone strike that targeted a restaurant and an armed vehicle inside a crowded market in the city of Al-Ghubaysh in West Kordofan, Sudan, according to a medical source and witnesses who spoke to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
A medical source at the city hospital said: “The hospital received 28 bodies and 23 injured people following the shelling of the market in the city, which is under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).”
One witness stated that “a drone struck and destroyed an armed vehicle belonging to the Rapid Support Forces,” while two other witnesses reported that the attack also hit a restaurant crowded with customers.
Fighting in the Kordofan region has intensified since the Rapid Support Forces consolidated control over the neighboring Darfur region at the end of last year, while drone attacks have increasingly dominated the course of the conflict.
The Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, whose war has now entered its fourth year, have recently increased their reliance on drones, resulting in the deaths of at least 800 people across Sudan since the beginning of the year, according to the United Nations.
