The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) revealed on Wednesday that only 21 percent of Sudan’s obstetric care network is fully operational, while Darfur faces serious barriers to accessing treatment and protection.
The Ministry of Health reports that the maternal mortality rate stands at 295 deaths per 100,000 live births, while the child mortality rate is 51 deaths per 1,000 live births.
In a statement, UNFPA said that “the National Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) Assessment Report for Sexual and Reproductive Health in Crisis Situations shows that only around 21 percent of Sudan’s Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC) network is currently fully operational.”
It explained that “the Sexual and Reproductive Health Technical Team has launched an interactive dashboard mapping the availability of sexual and reproductive health services and the clinical management of rape, in an effort to address these structural gaps.”
The agency noted that the dashboard covers 201 health facilities across 60 localities, providing real-time information on the readiness of obstetric care services and compliance with minimum standards for the clinical management of rape, as well as local-level shortages in medical supplies and commodities.
