Deteriorating Humanitarian Conditions in Darfur IDP Camps

Reports – Mashawir

The spokesperson for the Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugees in Sudan’s Darfur region, Adam Rijal, said there has been a dangerous increase in cholera outbreaks amid dire humanitarian conditions in the camps.

Rijal added that cholera-related deaths have exceeded 283 people since July 21, while the cumulative number of infections has risen to 6,744 cases across Darfur.

He noted that the severe water crisis is forcing displaced people in Darfur to rely on contaminated wells and valleys, which has fueled the spread of cholera.

Rijal explained that the Darfur region is experiencing extremely difficult humanitarian conditions, with worsening suffering among residents, particularly in displacement camps, due to shortages of food and basic services.

He further pointed out that the spread of cholera and other diseases, such as malaria, has escalated sharply during the rainy season, amid piles of uncollected waste and limited access to clean water, stressing that the health situation has reached a critical stage.
