The Humanitarian Aid Commission in North Darfur State reported that 229 people, including 171 children and 58 elderly individuals, have died of hunger in El Fasher since the end of August. The deaths follow the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) tightening their siege on the city, which has caused a total collapse in food supplies.
According to the commission, the total death toll in the city due to the siege and fighting has reached 675 people, while 1,464 others have been injured — including hundreds of children and women.
More than 74,000 people, among them 38,000 children, are facing catastrophic conditions inside the besieged city. Many residents have resorted to eating “umbaz” — a type of animal fodder — as their main meal.
Currently, only six charity kitchens (known as “takayas”) remain operational, while 15 others have partially shut down due to lack of funding and security threats.
Given this dire humanitarian situation, the commission has called for the immediate lifting of the siege on El Fasher and the urgent delivery of food supplies by air drops, in addition to opening safe corridors for aid delivery and the evacuation of the wounded, as well as providing essential medical supplies to the few health centers still functioning.
