Life Sentence for Sudanese Asylum Seeker Convicted of Killing British Woman

London - Mashaweer - Agencies

A British court ruled yesterday (Friday) to imprison a Sudanese asylum seeker for a minimum of 29 years for the murder of a woman who worked at a hotel in central England where he and other migrants were staying.

Anti-immigration activists are utilizing other criminal cases occurring in hotels involving asylum seekers, most of whom are young men, to argue that they pose a danger to surrounding residents.

Last summer, protests broke out at hotels housing refugees in England following the arrest of an Ethiopian asylum seeker on charges of sexually assaulting a young girl and a woman; these protests subsequently turned into acts of violence.

The Labour government, concerned by the rise of the anti-immigration “Reform” party in opinion polls, has promised to take strict measures against illegal immigration and to stop housing asylum seekers in hotels while their applications are being processed by the year 2029.

The Sudanese asylum seeker, Deng Chol Majek, stalked 27-year-old Rhianne Wright to a railway station in October 2024 after she finished her work. He stabbed her 23 times in the head, chest, and arm with a screwdriver; she passed away in the hospital three days later.

Majek was convicted in October, and Coventry Crown Court issued a life sentence with a minimum term of 29 years. Some anti-immigration protesters gathered outside the court to attend the session.
