64 killed in attack on hospital in Sudan

East Darfur - Mashaweer

64 people were killed and dozens injured in a strike that hit a hospital in Sudan, according to a report from the World Health Organization yesterday, Saturday.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated that a strike targeting a hospital in Sudan resulted in 64 deaths, including 13 children.

In a post on the X platform, Tedros said: The World Health Organization has verified a new attack on healthcare facilities in Sudan. This time, the El Daein Teaching Hospital in the capital of East Darfur was targeted, resulting in the deaths of at least 64 people, including 13 children, two nurses, one doctor, and a number of patients.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Sudan had previously expressed its deep dismay regarding an attack on a hospital in East Darfur yesterday, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of dozens, including children, and many injuries. It noted a toll of 64 dead and 89 wounded.

The Sudanese rights group Emergency Lawyers, which documents atrocities in the ongoing war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, reported that the strike was carried out by army drones and hit the El Daein Teaching Hospital.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been experiencing a continuous war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths, the displacement of at least 11 million people, and a hunger and displacement crisis that the UN considers the worst in the world.

The Rapid Support Forces control the Darfur region in the west of the country, while the army controls most of the east, center, and south.

The WHO surveillance system for attacks on healthcare facilities and workers in Sudan had confirmed the incident last Friday without specifying its location.

Its records showed a violent attack with heavy weapons that caused damage to a secondary healthcare facility, medical staff, patients, supplies, and warehouses.

The UN’s World Health Organization counts and verifies attacks on health facilities but does not point fingers at any party, as it is not an investigative body.

The city of El Daein, the capital of East Darfur state which is under the control of the Rapid Support Forces, is subject to repeated attacks launched by the army.
