Cholera cases have surged dramatically in the Darfur region, with more than 595 people infected over the past three days.
According to Adam Rijal, spokesperson for the General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur, over 475 people have contracted cholera, with large numbers still arriving at isolation centers and yet to be fully counted. Several deaths have also been reported.
Rijal added, “In Kalma Camp (17 kilometers from Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State), there are more than 120 cholera cases that have been transferred to isolation centers. Some patients have recovered, while others remain under hospital treatment, and several have died.”
He expressed concern about the further spread of the disease, particularly with the onset of the rainy season and the lack of clean drinking water and proper sanitation services.
The spokesperson stressed that the humanitarian situation has reached a critical level, as residents are suffering from hunger, malnutrition, and illness, especially children, pregnant women, and nursing mothers. Food shortages are increasing the risk of disease and death.
He also pointed out that living conditions have become catastrophic due to the severe shortage of food, medicine, and shelter for the displaced.
