At least eight people were killed on Tuesday in a drone strike launched by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on a hospital in the city of El Fasher, located in Sudan’s Darfur region, according to a medical source cited by Agence France-Presse on Wednesday.
The source said that the maternity ward at El Fasher Hospital was hit by a drone, causing the deaths of eight people and injuring seven others. The strike also caused significant damage to the building and medical equipment.
Numerous medical and health facilities have come under attack since the war in Sudan erupted between the army and the RSF in mid-April 2023.
El Fasher Hospital remains one of the few functioning health institutions in North Darfur State.
The RSF has besieged El Fasher for over a year, the capital of North Darfur, subjecting the city to intensified attacks in recent months, particularly targeting displacement camps that once hosted hundreds of thousands of people fleeing the conflict.
El Fasher is the last major city in Darfur still under the control of the army and its allies, while the RSF has trapped at least 260,000 civilians inside the city since May 2024.
The United Nations has warned that these civilians are facing severe food insecurity amid an almost complete halt of humanitarian aid deliveries.
The war in Sudan has killed tens of thousands and created what the UN describes as “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.”
In North Darfur alone, more than one million people are suffering from famine, according to international organizations.
