Power Outages Deepen the Suffering of Khartoum Residents

Omdurman – Mashawir

Residents of the Sudanese capital, across its three cities — Khartoum, Omdurman, and Bahri — are facing a severe humanitarian crisis that has disrupted their daily lives due to scheduled electricity cuts lasting up to 20 hours a day.

Fatima Omar, a housewife living in the Al-Thawrat area, told Mashawir that citizens are living through a complex crisis caused by the lack of electricity, which has severely disrupted their lives and created family hardships as many simple income-generating activities have stopped.

She added that the prolonged power outages have also created life-threatening problems. “I go to the market every day to buy ice, which has become a scarce commodity because of the high demand during these long outages, in order to preserve insulin doses from spoiling,” she said.

The resident pointed out that the suffering has become unbearable and that managing daily life without electricity has become nearly impossible, especially in public hospitals, medical laboratories, radiology centers, and other essential services.
