Sudan is experiencing one of the harshest heatwaves in recent years after the Meteorological Authority issued a “red alert” warning of dangerously high temperatures affecting three states, amid growing fears of serious health and living consequences that could push conditions to the brink of crisis.
Residents are enduring extremely harsh days under scorching heat alongside worsening water and electricity shortages.
Reflecting the level of official concern, educational authorities in River Nile State — one of the states under the red alert — decided to shorten school hours and end the school day at 10:30 a.m. following growing fears for the safety of students and teachers inside classrooms, which residents described as “burning hot rooms.”
Doctors also warned of increasing cases of epidemic meningitis in some displacement areas, noting that the current climatic conditions, combined with overcrowding and poor environmental conditions, provide a favorable environment for the spread of the disease.
