The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that women and girls have been abducted and raped during their recent journeys from Sudan to Chad, as the pace of the refugee exodus has accelerated twentyfold.
Chad is hosting approximately 1.3 million Sudanese refugees, who are living in difficult humanitarian conditions amid an inadequate response to their needs.
Mamadu Dian Balde, the UN Regional Refugee Coordinator for Sudan, said during a press conference at the Palais des Nations in Geneva: “Newly arrived refugees continue to describe the devastating human cost of the conflict in Sudan, with women and girls reporting serious violations, including abduction and rape, during their journeys to Chad in search of safety.”
He revealed that the pace of Sudanese refugee arrivals in Chad has risen sharply, with more than 400 people crossing the border areas of Adré and Tina each day over the past week, equivalent to 20 times the daily average recorded in previous months.
