Academics and Community Leaders Support Peacebuilding Efforts in Sudan

Khartoum – Mashaweer

Sudan Open University in Khartoum concluded its third training course as part of a specialized training program for traditional, religious, and community leaders. The course, titled “Strategies for Building Community Peace in Sudan,” brought together a number of community leaders and prominent figures from different states across the country.

The course focused on the importance of strengthening cooperation among traditional administrations, religious and community leaders, and educational and knowledge institutions, as well as unifying efforts and visions to support social cohesion and promote a culture of dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence. The program was based on the understanding that achieving sustainable peace requires investing in people, rebuilding the social fabric, and restoring trust among different components of society.

Speaking to Mashaweer, university lecturer Mahmoud Abdel-Nabi said, “Traditional, religious, and community leaders represent a safety net for Sudanese society and bear a great responsibility for bridging divisions, bringing viewpoints closer together, and promoting a culture of peace and coexistence among the different components of society.”

For his part, community leader Abdel-Karim Rahmatallah praised the university’s initiative to organize the training courses in comments to Mashaweer.

He called for the continuation and expansion of the program to include all states of Sudan, with the participation of traditional administrations, Sufi orders, scholars, intellectuals, journalists, artists, athletes, poets, and other influential groups in society.

He stressed that “expanding participation in such programs would strengthen community dialogue, unify efforts to support peace, address the impacts of the war, and build a more cohesive society.”
