17 Displaced Persons Die in the Desert While Heading to Northern Sudan

Follow-ups – Mashawir

The Humanitarian Aid Commissioner of Northern State, Abdulrahman Ali Khairi, reported the deaths of 17 displaced persons out of 41 who were stranded in the desert.

Residents of Darfur seeking to flee to Northern State are forced to travel to the border town of Tina, in the far north near Chad, before taking rough desert routes to Dabba and Dongola—a grueling journey that can last for days, sometimes up to a full month.

In a press statement, Khairi said that 41 people lost their way in the desert while traveling from Tina to Dabba in Northern State, resulting in 17 deaths.

He added that Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked the displaced persons as soon as they left Tina.

Khairi stated that he visited the displaced survivors at Dongola Military Hospital, which admitted 10 women and 13 children, and called for urgent support and care for those being treated.
