The Civil Democratic Alliance of Revolutionary Forces (Somood) welcomed the decision by the United States of America to classify the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a terrorist organization. The alliance stated that this step reflects an advanced international position toward what it described as the terrorism practiced by the group in the country.
In a statement issued by the Political Communication and Foreign Relations Committee, the alliance explained that the statement from the U.S. Department of State identified the components of this system, which include the Sudanese Islamic Movement and its armed wing known as the “Al-Baraa bin Malik Brigade.”
The alliance considered the decision to be a reflection of the will of the majority of the Sudanese people, as expressed by the Sudanese December Revolution. During that time, Sudanese people protested to reject the group’s rule, which lasted three decades. The statement accused the group of committing widespread violations, including genocide and crimes against civilians, in addition to spreading terrorism beyond Sudan’s borders and using the country as a platform for extremist projects.
The alliance noted that the decision was the result of continuous efforts by broad sectors of Sudanese civil and political forces. It pointed out that “Somood” had launched an international campaign in August of last year to demand the classification of the group as a terrorist organization.
